SOMATIC EXPEREINCING (SE)
“Trauma is the most avoided, ignored, denied, misunderstood and untreated cause of suffering.”
— Peter Levine
WHAT IS SE?
Somatic Experiencing is a form of therapy aimed at relieving and resolving the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental and physical trauma-related health problems by focusing on the client’s perceived body sensations (or somatic experiences).
If you seek to cultivate greater physical, mental & emotional well-being, know that this is not a quick fix (they do not exist), but a well-lit and clear path of self-discovery and empowered healing. It requires dedication and commitment, but the rewards are immense. I invite you to embark on this journey with me, unlocking the healing potential within your experiences to re-discover your wholeness.
SE is a body-oriented modality that helps heal trauma and other stress disorders. Developed by Peter Levine, Ph.D. It is the result of the multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics, with more than 45 years of successful application.
WHAT DOES SE TREAT?
SE heals trauma and other stress-related disorders through a naturalistic, and neurobiological, body-oriented approach. Restoring the authentic self with self-regulation, relaxation, wholeness, and aliveness.
Somatic Experiencing is based on the understanding that symptoms of trauma are the result of a dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and that the ANS has an inherent capacity to self-regulate that is undermined by trauma. SE bases its approach on the science that mammals automatically regulate survival responses from the primitive, non-verbal brain, mediated by the autonomic nervous system. In the wild animals spontaneously "discharge" this excess energy once safe. Involuntary movements such as shaking, trembling, and deep spontaneous breaths reset the ANS and restore equilibrium.
HOW DOES SE WORK?
Somatic Experiencing works towards restoring this inherent capacity to self-regulate by facilitating the release of energy and natural survival reactions stored during a traumatic event. Humans disrupt this discharge through our enculturation, rational thinking, shame, judgments, and fear of our bodily sensations.
"Trauma is not in the event itself; rather, trauma resides in the nervous system."
— Peter A Levine, PhD
“When a person is exposed to overwhelming stress, threat or injury, they develop a procedural memory. Trauma occurs when these implicit procedures are not neutralized. The failure to restore homeostasis is at the basis for the maladaptive and debilitating symptoms of trauma.”
— Peter A Levine, PhD

ABOUT
ALEX SMITH ~ SOMATIC EXPERIENCING PRACTITIONER
Hello, my name is Alex and for the better part of my life I have been looking for answers to a crucial question...
“How do we achieve real and sustainable relief?'
Over the past two decades I have had the opportunity to explore a vast number of treatment options. My work began with those struggling with addictions in a range of environments from inpatient settings to medical detox centers.
I then expanded into the treatment of mental illness where I went from sub-acute psychiatric facilities to rehabilitative home environments. I have worked closely with psychiatrists and addictionologists. I have been in both the private and non-profit sects of this industry.
I have worked in gender specific settings with those seeking relief from the effects of abuse and trauma. I have worked with men and women from every walk of life and I have discovered a common thread. Of those people I have come into contact with; all of them have been seeking relief. Seeking a sense of safety and relief from pain.
